JJ has been in the music ministry since he was 17 years old. He loves to experience God through worship and leads the contemporary service along with a fantastic team of talent at Austin Oaks Church. He has two awesome teens and loves to go on adventures with them. JJ was the former bassist for Sixpence None the Richer and Plumb and still performs, records and writes music all over Austin. Mary Ellen Johnson
Director of Traditional Worship and Fine Arts
Mary Ellen leads worship in our traditional worship service, oversees the Visual Arts Ministry (VAM), and directs the Monterey Oaks School of Fine Arts (MOSOFA). She grew up in Odessa, Texas and lived in Waltham, Massachusetts for almost 15 years. She has taught school as well as private lessons in piano and voice. Mary Ellen holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Texas and a Master of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Between rehearsals, performances and teaching, Mary Ellen loves spending time with her husband, Gary, and her two sons, Jordan and Alex. She also enjoys cooking, walking and dreams of someday becoming fluent in Spanish and German.

In Josh's role as Technical Ministry Associate, he oversees all of the audio, visual and lighting systems at our church. He was born and raised in Austin and has been attending here since 2008. He and his wife, Samantha, also a native Austinite, were married in 2009. They currently have two dogs, Missy and Swanson, and a turtle, Coheed. He enjoys going to concerts and watching movies with friends and family. His favorite animals are puppies and his favorite color is light tan.

Receptionist / Administrative Assistant
Joy joined our staff in October of 2015. She is originally from San Antonio, but moved to Austin in the early 80’s to study fine art and to enjoy the hill country and lakes. She married her husband Van, in 1984, and immediately became step mom to his three children, one dog and a grandbaby. In 1991 they adopted a son named Will, and eventually landed in New Braunfels, TX. In 2003, they adopted a teenage daughter, named Elena. Joy comes to us from the health care industry, bringing with her years of administrative experience and skill. She enjoys reading, gardening, music, painting, photography and family time with their five children, seven grandchildren and two great granddaughters.
